This is a painting by Antonio Ruiz entitled "El Sueno de la Malinche" ("The Dream of la Malinche"). It is located in the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in Mexico City. It is a modern interpretation of Malintzin and depicts her on a brass bed. The colony growing on her back is the future in which Malintzin may not of predicted when she made her choices but the choices she made inevitably lead to Spanish domination. One wrong toss and turn during her dream and it could have been disastrous for all.
I believe that Townsend would find this painting to be an accurate portrayal of Malintzin because of the symbolism. It portrays her in a restless sleep with the weight of the Mexican Empire pressing on her. Her actions (translations) decide whether or not the Church and Spanish remain on top literally and figuratively. She is helping to create the future Spanish colonies "on her back." She is often seen being strong, commanding, or as a betrayer but here she is portrayed as being lost in a scary dream that one wrong turn could cause total failure or even her demise. Townsend would agree that Malintzin did what she had to do to survive and that this would accurately show how she internally may have struggled with her choices.
