Malinchismo

This image of La Malinche is a wonderful representation of what modern day Mexican lingo refers to the word Malinchismo. Malinchismo is a common term used in Mexico to refer to a person who prefers a foreign country rather than their own and even go as far as to criticize their own country. As we can see in this image, there is a contrast of skin color on Malinche. To the left, her dark skin represents her native roots and her people, to the right, the lighter skin represents the connection she had with the Spanish. If we take an even closer look, one eye is opened (right) and the other is closed (left). The reason that is, is because the eyes represent her preference, she has shut down or ignored her native roots and has accepted the new culture that she is involved with. This image pretty much says "Malinalli is dead and now rises a new person, Marina"

If Townsend were to rate this image, she would enjoy the quality of the painting, but then she would disagree with the idea that this image depicts because Malintzin's history is not certain and this image is merely an opinion or belief rather than strong evidence of her life. It is not know that Malintzin rejected her native background and  preferred the Spanish culture, as we mentioned in class, she maybe had no choice but to accept the new culture.
