comparison between book and movie
When I started eatching the movie i could see that three were many comparisons to the book. I could idemtify both the movie and the book by how the friars served as toolos to forced some of the natives to convert. Althiugh some of them did decide to convert it was more of a decision that was forced upon them. I say that because it was their only way of surviving through the conquest of religion.
Ambivelent conquest was a conquest were the struggle of the natives was to decide to keep their religion or to abandones it by adapting something unkown to them. One examplr of thatbisbwhere the indian in the movie says " madre can have my body but not my soul" meaning that its soul was still left with it.
The friars also played a main role in botht the movie and the book. They were the medium of religion and transformation. In the movie. Don juan proteftes the native but also punish him him when he found out that he wasmt completely converted.
On pg. 75 we see how the friars used forced and punishment.. " mani friars
werebpunctilious regarding the sacred and ceremonial aspects of the law. On sunday soon after the initial discoveries they celebrated an auto de fe, the judicial sentencing of offendere against fait"... lashes crossed their backs just like shown in the movie.
Both the book and the movie shows no complete conquest of religion. Natives shoe how they were not compces in the completely converted and how the friars tried hard to convert them and punish them if not. Although some friars had patience inthe process..
